Mountain hikes in Uganda.
Hiking the Rwenzori Mountains.
Rwenzori Mountains are Uganda’s highest mountains and are famous for their outstanding hiking and mountaineering possibilities. Margherita Peak, standing at 5109 metres, is the highest point in the range. In contrast to Mount Kilimanjaro, climbing to the top won’t break the bank, and you’ll probably have the mountains to yourself. But be ready for a strenuous climb the Rwenzori is more technical and muddy than Kilimanjaro, and altitude sickness is a serious risk that should not be ignored.
Even if you’re not a skilled hiker, there are still lovely vistas and scenery to be found on shorter, easier walks. Whichever path you select, you’ll be treated to varied vegetation zones, animal species, and mountain views. Approximately 220 bird species, some of which are unique to this mountain range, and about 70 distinct mammal species can be found in the surrounding park.
Hiking Mount Elgon.
Many tourists discover that Mount Elgon is an enjoyable and thrilling substitute for the more difficult treks in East Africa. At 4321 meters, the summit is located. The Sasa route is the most direct and shortest path. The first day of this four-day round-trip route is the most difficult. Get ready for some rain and some cold nights.
Hiking Mgahinga National Park.
Ugandan territory within the Virunga Mountains is safeguarded by Mgahinga National Park. A broader nature reserve that stretches into Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo includes the chain of extinct volcanoes known as the Virunga Mountains.
Since the nature reserve extends over national borders, mountain gorillas roam freely between Rwanda and Uganda. Mgahinga National Park is also home to the put at risk golden monkeys, and the vulnerable Batwa pygmies – Uganda’s indigenous hunter-gatherers.
If you’re intrigued in hiking the Virunga Volcanoes, you can join guided day hikes that depart on demand daily from the UWA park entrance gate. Keep in mind that all hikes require a good level of fitness and take around 7 to 9 hours to complete.
The hike up to Sabyinyo from Ntebeko Gate is the most well-liked. Keep your head up! Hikers who are afraid of heights shouldn’t attempt this hike because it includes multiple difficult ladder climbs. Another walk is the ascent to Mount Gahinga from Ntebeko, which involves a walk through the bamboo zone where a variety of flora and fauna can be seen.
Hiking Mount Moroto.
Few people likely know about the final mountain on our list of the top four hikeable mountains in Uganda. Situated in Karamoja, Mount Moroto is a high, extinct volcano rising more than three thousand meters. Approximately 40,000 Tepeth people, who may be Karamoja’s original inhabitants, call it home. It takes two to three days to hike to the highest peak. You’ll be rewarded with waterfalls, different bird species, and cave paintings. Not feeling up to a multi-day walk?
Sipi Falls.
Enjoy gentle walks in the surrounding hills of the Sipi Falls. A day hike from the main waterfall to three smaller falls upstream is an option for those seeking a longer hike. Magnificent views of waterfalls and expansive valley landscapes are provided by both options. Some of the important sites are inaccessible without a local guide. Consider it a pleasant way to help the local community and landowners.
Lake Bunyonyi & Lake Mutanda.
Lake Mutanda and Lake Bunyonyi are excellent safari destinations to visit if you want to see gorgeous lake views and chat with the locals. Starting at Crater Bay, close to the Bunyonyi Overland Camp, is where the Lake Bunyonyi trail begins. You can enjoy a leisurely 40-minute canoe ride to the starting point. Mutanda Lake Resort provides cultural walks that take you to interesting locations such as a school and a local healer. You won’t get lost if you keep the lakes in sight when exploring both areas on your own.
