Rules and regulations for Gorilla trekking: Gorilla trekking is the most famous activity in Uganda where visitors move into the tropical rain forests to look for the habituated gorilla families and once found spend one hour with them in their natural habitat. Gorilla trekking in Uganda is carried out in 2 destinations namely Bwindi impenetrable national park and Mgahinga gorilla national park. Gorilla trekking is also carried out in other African countries such as Rwanda where it’s done in Volcanoes national park and Democratic Republic of Congo where it’s done in Virunga national park and Kahuzi Biega national park.

There are about 1063 mountain gorillas in the world and about 459 are found in Uganda which makes it the best gorilla trekking destination in Africa. Gorilla trekking rules and regulations were put in place so as to protect the health and safety of the endangered mountain gorillas.

Rules and regulations before departing for gorilla trekking

  • Gorilla trekking only allows a maximum number of 8 people per day to visit each habituated gorilla family so as to minimize behavioral disturbances and the risk of transmitting human diseases.
  • Visitors should wash hands before going for gorilla trekking.

Rules and regulations when with the mountain gorillas

  • Visitors are allowed to spend one hour with the habituated gorilla families in their natural habitat though gorilla trekking itself takes about 30 minutes to 7 hours and during this time visitors are allowed to take photos, record the videos and learn more about the gorillas lifestyle, behaviors, habits among others.
  • When taking photos you should use flash less cameras because flash cameras can frighten or threaten the gorillas or provoke them to charge.
  • Visitors should stay in a group during trekking so as not to get lost in the wild and this allows the gorillas to carry out their daily activities without feeling threatened.
  • Visitors should not touch the mountain gorillas because they are wild animals.
  • In case a gorilla charges, you should stay calm, do not run away or look directly into its eyes but rather crouch down, make yourself small and move away slowly.
  • Visitors should not eat, drink or smoke anything while in the presence of the mountain gorillas because food particles might fall down which increases the risk of disease transmission.
  • Gorilla trekking is done by visitors who are above the age of fifteen years because children have communicable diseases which can be transmitted to the mountain gorillas, children cannot take precautions in case a gorilla charges and always playful therefore they cannot listen or follow instructions provided by the park guide.
  • You should keep your voices low while in the presence of the mountain gorillas and during trekking so as not to frighten the gorillas and other animals in the forest and to minimize behavioral disturbances.
  • Do not litters or throw rubbish the forest during trekking therefore bring whatever you take with you bring it back and throw it in the dustbins at the park headquarters.
  • After the one hour with the mountain gorillas, keep your voices down until you reach 200 meters away from the gorillas.

  • In case you need to use a toilet while in the forest you can ask the guide to dig a 30cm deep hole with a panga and when you finish easing yourself cover it.
  • Visitors with illnesses such as cold, flue, cough among others are advised to cancel the activity because the mountain gorillas are vulnerable to human diseases.
  • Visitors should stay 7 meters away from the mountain gorillas so as to minimize the risk of transmitting human diseases to the gorillas.
  • In case you want to cough or sneeze, turn away from the gorillas or cover your mouth and nose so as to minimize the spread of viruses to the mountain gorillas.

What to carry on your gorilla trekking safari

  • Long sleeved shirt and trousers to keep you warm and protect you from thorny trees in the forest.
  • Hiking shoes to keep your feet dry especially when trekking in muddy grounds
  • Energy snacks such as drinking water and packed food to give you strength because trekking takes about 30 minutes to 7 hours.
  • Camera and extra batteries to take plenty of photos and record the moments to show people back home after your gorilla trekking safari.
