What are the rules for rhino tracking in Uganda? Rhino tracking in Uganda done at the Zziwa Rhino sanctuary almost every day and like any other tracking experience, has some rules and guidelines and they include but are not limited to: –

  • Having the right to track the rhinos. For this you should 15 years and above, physically fit and also have the rhino tracking permit. Permits are obtained from Uganda wildlife Authority or the Zziwa Rhino sanctuary. Consult your tour operator for more details.
  • All rhino tracking experiences are guided experiences, so you should make sure you have a well skilled and experienced guide to go with you before you attack the jungle. Usually, the management will provide guides for you; for make use of them.
  • Respect the Rhino habitat; do not litter things or do anything to degrade the habitat.
  • Move in quietness and calmness for you not to disrupt the peace of the rhinos and not to them in defense mood to want to attack you or hide for solace.
  • Be very observant. The rhinos have a habit of covering themselves in mud, so if you are not so observant you may actually miss them. so be very observant and alert. You can even look out for rhino tracks, wallows or scats. They are distinct and in Zziwa rhino sanctuary there are only rhinos there, so this should not be hard.
  • Maintain a 100 feet distance between you and the rhinos at all times. Even if you are tempted, don’t try to move any closely to the rhinos.
  • Children are not allowed to do any rhino tracking of any sort.
  • You can move out of the car for short bits of time, however if you sense it’s not safe get back in your car promptly or better still do not leave your car at all.
  • For this experience dress in neutral-colored colors and less scents. For you not to attract the rhinos to you.
  • Don’t use flash photography or videography.

  • Do not beat the Rhinos or Knock them, even if they come close to your car. Stay calm and wait for them to move away. You should always remember that the rhino conservation and safety is more important.
