Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve

Kabwoya wildlife reserve is an extraordinary game reserve located in Hoima district between the Albertine rift valley escarpment and the shoreline of Lake Albert. The reserve covers a total area of 87 square kilometers, was gazetted in 1980 and became a wildlife reserve in 2002. The reserve harbors a number of animal species, primates, birds among others and offers interesting activities including game drives, birding, cycling, nature walks, quad biking and many others.

Animals, the reserve is a home of different animals species including Uganda kobs, waterbucks, bushbucks, buffaloes, hippos, warthogs, bush pigs, bush duikers, oribi, bohor reedbucks, Jackson hartebeest, giant forest hogs, carnivores like hyenas, leopards, primates like chimpanzees, black and white colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys, baboons among others.

Bird species, the reserve harbors more than 460 bird species including Albertine rift endemic species which makes it one of the best birding destinations in Uganda. Bird species in the reserve include stripe breasted tit, dwarf honey guide, Rwenzori turaco, handsome francolin among others.

Game drives in Kabwoya wildlife reserve

Game drive is one of the major activities in the reserve where visitors will explore the park in a 4 WD safari vehicle with a professional guide who is well conversant with different game tracks. Game drives in the reserve can either be done during the day or at night and you will be rewarded with great views of animals like buffaloes, warthogs, reedbucks, hartebeest, giant forest hogs, Uganda kobs, duikers, hippos, oribi, bushbucks, bush pigs, view carnivores like leopards and hyenas if you are lucky.

Fishing in Kabwoya wildlife reserve

Fishing is one of the major activities and it’s conducted on Lake Albert. The wildlife reserve offers half day or full day fishing tours on Lake Albert and only allows a maximum of 3 anglers in each boat. During fishing anglers will be able to catch different fish types such as Nile perch.

Nature walks in Kabwoya wildlife reserve

This is an interesting activity where visitors get an opportunity to explore the reserve on foot with the company of an experienced guide and ranger guides to protect you from dangerous animals. During the guided nature walk you will get up close and personal with different wildlife species including warthogs, Uganda kobs,  primates, view different bird species, enjoy the cool breeze, sweet sounds of bird species singing in trees, take beautiful pictures among others.

The reserve is a home of more than 460 recorded bird species including the Albertine rift endemic species. Bird watching in the reserve can either be done early in the morning or late in the evening with a bird guide who will help you to spot different bird species like black headed weaver, kingfishers, grey crowned cranes, northern carmine bee-eater, yellow billed oxpecker, stripe breasted tit, dwarf honey guide, grauers broadbill, Rwenzori turaco, handsome francolin, dusky crimson wing, Willard’s sooty boubou among others.

Quad biking in Kabwoya wildlife reserve

The reserve is the only reserve that offers the exceptional quad biking activity where visitors will explore different areas in the reserve on a quad bike. During quad biking visitors will get an opportunity to reach some areas where vehicles do not reach and also view abundant animals at a close range, view different bird species, enjoy the beautiful scenery among others.

Fossil hunting in Kabwoya wildlife reserve

Fossil hunting is an interesting activity in the reserve that shouldn’t be missed during your Uganda wildlife safari in the reserve.  During fossil hunting visitors are allowed to hunting in search of fossils that have existed for generations.

Horseback riding in Kabwoya wildlife reserve

Horseback riding is an amazing activity in the reserve where visitors will be able to explore the reserve on a horseback. Apart from Lake Mburo national park, the reserve is another destination in Uganda that offers horseback riding. Horseback rides are best done early in morning or in the evening so as to view variety of wildlife species such as Uganda kobs, warthogs, buffaloes, duikers among others.

Best time to visit Kabwoya wildlife reserve

The reserve can be visited any time throughout the year though the best time is during the dry season in the months of June, July, August, September, December, January and February. During the dry season the reserve receives less rainfalls therefore vegetation will be thin which helps you to view wildlife species easily and also access roads to the reserve will be passable.

Where to stay in Kabwoya wildlife reserve

There are various accommodations in the reserve where you can stay during your safari such as Lake Albert safari lodge, Kikonko lodge among others.

How to get to Kabwoya wildlife reserve

The reserve in located in Hoima district and can be accessed by road transport means whereby you will drive from Kampala to Hoima which takes about 4 hours drive in a 4 WD safari vehicle. The wildlife reserve can also be accessed from Murchison falls national park which takes about 2 to 3 hours drive and Kibale forest national park which takes about 5 to 6 hours drive.
